Brakes—we all know our vehicles need them. They’re an essential part of our cars and maybe have even helped prevent an accident in a pinch, but how do they work? What are brake pads and brake rotors? These are all important and commonly asked questions.
To help drivers from around the Willow Grove, Horsham, or Abington, PA, areas, learn more about brake pads and brake rotors, Faulkner Alfa Romeo Willow Grove has put together this page. Give it a read to learn a bit more about your vehicle!
Brake pads are the first of a set of components that make up your vehicle’s braking system. They are often square and made of friction material. There are a couple of different kinds of brake pads ranging from a softer material to a harder one, depending on your vehicle’s needs and your driving style.
As you brake, the pads wear down and need to be replaced—usually between 15,000 and 60,000 miles, depending on your driving style and the brake pad material.
Brake pads are connected to a part of the brake called the caliper. When you brake, the calipers engage your brake pads, and then apply pressure to the rotors to help you get enough friction to stop your vehicle.
Brake rotors, or brake discs, are the part of your braking system that the brake pads put pressure on to stop the wheels from spinning. They look like metal discs and can be made in different styles depending on the type of vehicle you’re driving. They help dissipate heat built-up from the friction of stopping the wheels.
When you brake, the brake pads press against the rotors. The rotors are connected to the axels, which spin the wheels. When the rotors slow and stop, so do the wheels, braking your vehicle. Over time, the brake rotors wear down and need to be replaced. They typically last about 30,000 to 70,000 miles.
Brake rotors and brake pads can typically be replaced at a service center, including ours. If your brakes are making squealing or grinding noises, or your steering wheel is shaking, it might be time to get your brakes checked out.
Our service center technicians can do brake inspections and repairs along with other important vehicle services like wheel alignments, oil changes, and transmission service. If you do need to have your brake pads or rotors replaced, we use genuine MOPAR® parts.
Considering replacing them yourself? No problem. You can order the parts through us and even take them home with you. If you decide you want us to install them, we can do that, too!
